Great Wall Cars, through its Philippine importer and distributor, Statemotor Corp., has joined this year’s Car of the Year-Philippines (Coty-P), as organized by the Car Awards Group, Inc. (CAGI). 
The Coty-P is an annual, rigorous competition involving both qualitative judging and instrumented performance tests that is open to all new cars and vehicle models available for purchase during the calendar year. Cars competing in Coty-P are scrutinized by CAGI’s 150 members, who come from various industry publications and media outlets, and test scores are audited at the end of the competition.

CAGI officers, headed by its Ferman Lao (President), Bam Olivares (VP-internal affairs), Kris Lim (Corporate secretary) and Bess Zamora (Treasurer), recently visited Statemotor Corp. to finalize Great Wall Cars’ participation as well as to present plans for this year’s awards including the test venue, technical criteria, and media support activities. 

Statemotor Corp. president and CEO Allen Roxas confirmed that Great Wall will enter its Wingle pickup and Hover SUV in the competition. “Our company is looking forward to seeing our products, in particular our Wingle and Hover, go up against the best vehicles in their respective classes. I am confident that they will impress the members of the Philippine motoring media, who will serve as the judges,” Roxas said.

The Wingle is the latest in a long line of award-winning pickups from Great Wall Motor Co. Ltd. (GW), China’s first privately-owned automaker listed in the Hong Kong stock market. The Hover, meanwhile, represents a fashionable and adventurous lifestyle.

I know Wayne’s site is about bikes and has nothing much to do with Great Wall Cars however being good friends with Wayne and having been involved in starting this site I asked Wayne to change tack a bit and let me share my Great Wall experience. 

Am I Mad - Why did I buy a Great Wall Hover?

No I am not mad although Wayne might sometimes disagree. I drove a late model Audi A4 and loved it until I realized that with a young son, bicycles and lots of other stuff the Audi wasn’t ideal.

I wanted something a little bigger that could handle dirt roads and a limited amount of off-road stuff. I was still blissfully unaware of the existence of the Great Wall Hover and considered all the usual choices Toyota, Nissan and similar. I did all the test drives of the Fortuner, X-Trail and others and then when I was all set to buy an X-Trail I saw a Great Wall Hover in a parking lot and got talking to the owner who raved about it.

Well I then thought let me try a test drive and unbelievably I really liked it. I expected to be gassed by cheap plastics and find a poorly made vehicle but I was pleasantly surprised.

Okay it might not be as well finished as some of the Toyota’s that cost over 100k more but let’s face it with a 100k I could take my family on a round the world trip, pay for my child’s university education or buy a small car. Plus the Hover really seemed solidly made, perhaps not so many gimmicks as Toyota or others but then all you want is a safe and reliable vehicle that stops when you want it to and is easy to repair.

How goes my Hover? Well I aim to share with you updates every three months or so on how it is going. Hopefully good but if it is bad they will hear it all the way to China.

Great Wall Motor Co., Ltd. (SEHK: 2333), one of China’s leading automakers, says that its Hover series has retained the top spot on the monthly sports utility vehicle (SUV) sales ranking list for the third month in a row.

The Baoding-based company sold 20,196 Hover branded SUVs in the first two months of the year, widening its gap with Dongfeng Honda Automobile Co., Ltd., maker of CR-V, the second best-selling SUV in the country.

Jia Yaquan, general manager in charge of the home market for Great Wall Motor, attributes the robust sales to the repositioning of the Hover series and the rollout of new products.
